Rotary Screw Compressors: 4 Types That Add Value

Table of Contents
Rotary screw air compressors are one of the most broadly applied air compressors in many industries today. Rotary screw compressors, a staple of the manufacturing industry, are available in two common types: oil-injected and oil-free. Oil is injected into the screw unit during compression in oil-injected rotary screw compressors. The oil is then siphoned out by an oil separator. Oil carryover, or oil that passes through the machine with the compressed air but is missed by the separator, is extremely little. The oil cools the compressed air while also lubricating the screw. This type of compressor is less expensive, produces less noise, and is easier to maintain than the oil-free type.
However, oil carryover, no matter how simple, can be a concern in some circumstances and industries. This is where oilless rotary screw air compressors, the second type, come in. The air is compressed in two stages and then fed through an intercooler to help reduce the temperature difference between the two stages. If not, the compressed air will reach extremely high temperatures. These compressors are more specialised and come at a higher cost. They also usually produce more noise and are high-maintenance.
While these are the two basic types of rotary screw compressors, there are further categories based on the layout and mechanics of compressors.

Rotary screw compressors can be divided into four subcategories

  1. Base mounted – A base-mounted rotary screw compressor is a stand-alone device that is often used when space is limited and a consistent supply of compressed air is required. An air receiver tank is usually not included in base-mounted systems. If necessary, base mounted air dryer versions are also available. Water vapor is one of the results of air compression. In some industries, this vapor is harmful to the environment or the product being created. In these circumstances, water vapor is removed from the compressed air produced by the compressor using an air dryer.
  1. Tank mounted – Rotary screw air compressor systems mounted to an air receiver tank are known as tank mounted rotary screw air compressors. When the amount of compressed air required grows, the receiver tank stores it. An air-drying function, which removes vapor from compressed air, is usually included in a receiver. Receiver tanks also have a pressure gauge and a pressure release valve, which helps to reduce pulsation.
  1. Total air system – Total air systems (TAS) combine the space-saving capabilities of a base-mounted compressor with the purification and air-storage capabilities of a tank-mounted compressor. In a total air system, the compressor, tank, dryer and even the filtration system are all integrated into one compact package. Total air systems are more convenient. And because all of the auxiliary functions are bundled into one unit, installation time and costs are significantly reduced.
  1. Variable speed – In the world of rotary screw compressors, variable speed rotary screw compressors are a relatively recent development that uses a motor drive to regulate their speed. This means the rotations per minute or RPM of the compressor can be changed on the basis of needs or load. As a result, the compressor becomes more energy efficient, helps control power surges and helps ensure an excellent temperature and humidity control.
As you can see, these four major subcategories each have distinct functions and abilities that differentiate them from each other. With their unique capabilities, each has particular advantages that suit specific applications.
The type of air compressor is further classified according to its capacity, voltage, horsepower, tank capacity (where applicable) and the configuration. Since you now know what each type of compressor can do, make your choice and All Air Compressors offers a wide variety of rotary screw air compressors suited for various applications.
